So I spent an hour or so playing on the new Sanctuary server last night. While I haven't been able to spend a lot of time on it I figured I'd write out my initial impressions for others thinking about trying it out. I played Live off and on since launch and since the private servers came out I've mostly played on Homecoming though I switched to Rebirth a few weeks ago. I have not tried Cake or Thunderspy so I'm unable to compare with them. Currently Sanctuary is primarily active on Discord. They do not have forums to connect on. The admins were quite active there, including Tyrant/HixxyDubz himself, though given that it was launch day that is to be expected. Their discord server has a lot of channels in it, including the standard chat, looking for group, and support but also a number of others. Honestly I think they have too many channels and should probably consolidate some of them as it sometimes took me a bit of scrolling to find the specific channel I was looking for, especially for help. I also noticed a couple people in general wondering where the help channel was and after having it pointed out to them mention they hadn't scrolled down far enough. For people that don't like to use Discord, getting assistance out of game might be a problem. I initially had quite a bit of problems getting connected to Sanctuary however the errors I got were from Wine due to the fact that I use Linux, not something I expect most other people to run into. For some reason the exact client that Sanctuary uses doesn't work with Wine 3. 0 which is what I have been using with Homecoming and Rebirth. It eventually turned out that updating to Wine 5. 2 was all I needed to do in order to keep the Sanctuary client from crashing. Hanging out in the help channel while working on my Wine glitch the most common problem other people, primarily Windows users, ran into was an error where certain files didn't appear to download correctly. A workaround was pinned in their main help channel where validating the Rebirth manifest file, then switching back to the Sanctuary manifest would fix this issue. I never ran into that specific error myself but it appears to have worked for others that had that problem. At least everyone I noticed asking about that issue and was pointed to the pinned post didn't come back into the help channel while I was there. Another potential tech issue, I did read a post in one of the channels saying that full screen desktop mode didn't work with Sanctuary. However I had no problems enabling it myself though fact that I am using Wine on Linux my results may differ then a standard Windows user. For those that have only played on Homecoming, Sanctuary is quite a bit different. It is based off the i24/Ourodev code so many of the i25 changes, like the pay2win vendor, don't exist. XP rates have definitely been increased. Although they posted they had increased XP by 4. 5% it felt like double XP. I reached L6 defeating Cinderburn and completing the Matthew Habashy arc and I didn't go out of my way to fight any extra enemies. Another major change is controllers can now gain their pet, something that normally happens at L32, at L1 during creation. This makes Controllers very powerful at low levels and it's obvious this was done to make them more easily soloable. Personally I don't like either of these changes, I think it makes the game way too easy and it's not like CoX is a difficult game to begin with. However, despite my personal opinion on these changes, I also don't think they should be reverted. Players aren't actually forced to use either of these changes. You can still turn off XP gain for a bit if you feel like you're gaining XP too quickly, and you can also simply not take the pet power until L32 to play an "old school" controller. The big reason to play Sanctuary of course is the new content. Tyrant has announced plans to make actual new content, including the Battalion storyline that was never done due to the sunset. That is quite ambitious and if actually done I will be very impressed, but for now I'm going to talk about what's already implemented. Archetypes: The new AT's are the most obvious of the new content and are probably the biggest reason to check out Sanctuary. Out of the 3 new AT's implemented, I've only had time to play one of them (the Primalist) so far, and then only to L6, but I have looked through them. Primalist: So far I really like the Primalist, enough that I hope this gets ported to Rebirth after some balance passes and bug fixes. It is a melee class that initially seems very similar to a scapper, melee damage primary with a defensive secondary. The primary powers are similar to Street Justice, even apparently having "primal power" mechanic similar to Street Justice's "combo" system. Where the Primalist becomes different is at L6 when they get their first shape change ability. While shape changed the player can still use their regular primalist attack powers, but they work a little differently. In the primalist (default) form all attacks deal bludgeoning damage and give out a small heal. In wolf/coyote form they deal lethal damage and give out a -def to enemies. At higher levels there is a also a prowler form that again makes minor changes to the primalists primary attacks. This makes the primalist interesting to play as they can shift forms depending on circumstances and need. They also get the ability to summon pets at higher levels. From the description these pets are the same as MM's beast mastery. One thing about the primalist is that the run animation while in wolf/coyote form looks a little goofy to me, especially with sprint activated. Patron Master: The Patron Master is an AT I'm not certain about, though it looks like it'd be up my alley. The idea is that they are a disciple of one of Recluse's lieutenants and therefore have mastered the powers of their patron. All of their primary powers are based off the existing Patron Power pools, with a mix of some epics to fill in the gaps. Looking through the powers they look like a mix of a blaster (my favorite AT), with a MM (my 2nd favorite AT). Since I haven't actually played one yet I don't know much more about them and would like to hear from someone who has. Freakshow: This is the AT I'm least familiar with as I admit I only skimmed through the powersets. My issue with it is I couldn't quite figure out the idea of the AT besides "be a freakshow". The powersets all seemed different from each other. I am planning on looking at them closer and trying one tonight. Costumes: The costume creator has quite a bit in it. The most noticeable change of course being able to have different gloves for right/left hands without having to use the "robot arm" options. A lot of Freakshow components are available to be added onto as well. Power Pools: The 5 "origin" power pools are included. I haven't had the chance to try them all out but they look interesting. I did try out Free Running, one of the new travel powers, on one of my chars. It was identical to Ninja Run except it took up a buy and can be slotted. I'd need to play with them more but my initial impression is that they're good and would like to see them on other servers. Ultimately I don't see myself leaving Rebirth for Sanctuary. I like the more conservative gameplay experience that Rebirth offers. However I think Sanctuary will probably appeal to quite a bit of people. Especially those looking for a fast and customizable experience. While I am not interested in playing on Sanctuary itself, I am quite in it's development. I've heard that they are making their code changes freely available, and since Sanctuary is based off i24/Ourodev that means any changes they develop could be potentially be merged into other Ourodev based servers like Thunderspy, Cake and Rebirth. I would love to see not only the Primalist on Rebirth, but other future content, like a Battalion arc, be developed on Sanctuary and then ported into Rebirth. I'm certain that Sanctuary players probably want things from Rebirth, like the Guardian AT, migrated to them as well. The one year anniversary of the server code release is coming up. There are a lot of CoX servers out there now. In some ways it has divided the community, bitterly at times. I'm certain there are people who worry that yet another CoX server, like Sanctuary, will do nothing but divide us even further. I disagree. It doesn't really matter what "flavor" of CoX people prefer. What matters is that we currently have the ability to play the game we love and only by working together can we not only keep the code safely distributed but even improved.
